International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) Programme at UWE Bristol

An experienced teacher engages with students – UWE Bristol’s iQTS program prepares educators to teach with confidence globally.

Why IQTS @ UWE?

The International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) is a new UK-government backed teaching qualification that meets the same high standards as England’s Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and leads to the automatic award of QTS upon completion. Offered fully online, iQTS enables you to train as a teacher in the country where you live and work, without needing to travel to England. UWE Bristol (University of the West of England) is proud to be an approved provider of iQTS, leveraging over 70 years of teacher training experience and a strong reputation. By choosing UWE Bristol’s iQTS program, you’ll join a community led by expert educators and mentors dedicated to supporting your development as a globally recognized teacher

UWE Bristol’s iQTS program is a comprehensive 36-week teacher training course that combines interactive online learning with real-world teaching practice. Key features of the program include:

English Curriculum Training, Delivered Online

Engage in high-quality, evidence-based teacher training aligned with English standards while based at an international school in your country. Coursework is accessible via UWE’s digital learning platform, so you can participate from anywhere in the world.

In-School Teaching Practice

You will spend a minimum of 120 days in a local school placement during the program, implementing what you learn. This practical component – spread over the 36 weeks – allows you to gain hands-on teaching experience with support.

Personalized Support – Tutor and Mentor

Each trainee is supported by a dedicated UWE Bristol tutor as well as a trained in-school mentor. Your UWE tutor will offer one-on-one guidance, regular check-ins and feedback to ensure you’re progressing well.

Accredited Postgraduate Qualification

The iQTS program at UWE is delivered at the postgraduate level. In fact, UWE’s course leads to both iQTS and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), with coursework at Master’s level (Level 7) totaling 60 credits.

Application Process and Timeline

UWE Bristol offers the iQTS program with multiple start dates each year, typically two intakes – in September and January. Applications are currently open for the September 2025 cohort, with a subsequent intake in January 2026.

Eligibility Requirements

This program is designed for passionate educators who are teaching (or aspiring to teach) in international or English-curriculum schools outside of England. Both non-UK and UK citizens living overseas are welcome to apply. Key eligibility requirements include:

Academic Qualifications: A completed undergraduate bachelor’s degree (2:2 or equivalent overseas qualification).

School Experience and Employment: At least two years of teaching experience is recommended. Importantly, you must be employed at a school (primary or secondary) that agrees to support your training throughout the 36-week program

Prerequisite Subjects (for UK-equivalent standards): For Primary (ages 5–11) applicants, you need prior attainment equivalent to UK GCSE Grade C/4 in Mathematics and a Science subject.. For Secondary (ages 11–16) applicants, a GCSE-equivalent Grade C/4 in Mathematics is required.

English Language Proficiency: All participants must have a high command of English, as the training and teaching practice are conducted in English. If English is not your first language, you’ll need to prove proficiency (usually an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, or an equivalent test). Some applicants may be exempt if they have completed prior education in English

If you are unsure about meeting a specific requirement (for example, your qualifications or school arrangements), our team can advise on a case-by-case basis!
